Terminology: Key Concepts in the Kelvetorpe System

A reference guide to the terms used throughout the Kelvetorpe service. Understanding these definitions helps users navigate the interface and interpret the information the platform presents.

How to Use This Reference

The terms below are organised into groups that reflect the main aspects of the Kelvetorpe service: the structural concepts, the classification process, the review environment, and the access framework. Within each group, terms are listed alphabetically. Where a term is used in a specific technical sense within the platform, that usage is explained alongside the general definition.

Structural Concepts
Category
A named division of the classification scheme into which items are placed. Each category groups items that share defined characteristics according to the scheme's rules. Categories are presented in the primary navigation layer of the interface.
Classification scheme
The set of rules that determines how items are assigned to categories. The scheme defines which properties of an item are relevant to its placement and how those properties are evaluated. The scheme is applied consistently across all items within the system.
Item
A discrete unit of information within a category. An item has a set of classified fields whose values are determined by the classification process. Items are the primary objects that users examine when reviewing the platform's content.
Navigation layer
The part of the interface that presents the category structure and allows users to move between categories. The navigation layer is persistent across sessions and reflects the full set of categories available at the user's access tier.
Subcategory
A subdivision within a category that provides a finer level of classification. Not all categories have subcategories. Where subcategories exist, they appear within the category view rather than in the primary navigation layer.
Access tier
The level of access granted to a user following a successful access review. Different tiers may provide access to different categories or to different levels of detail within the same category. Tier boundaries are communicated at the time of access confirmation.
Classification Process
Arrangement
The ordered presentation of items within a category. Arrangement is determined by the classification rules for that category and may reflect chronological order, relevance ranking, or another criterion. The arrangement method is described within the category view.
Classification
The process of assigning an item to a category based on its properties and the rules of the classification scheme. Classification takes place before user access and is not altered by user interaction with the platform.
Classified field
A data field on an item whose value has been determined through the classification process. Classified fields are displayed in the item view in a consistent layout shared by all items within the same category.
Cross-reference
A link from one item to a related item in the same or a different category. Cross-references are established during the classification process where relationships between items have been identified. They are displayed in the item view and can be followed directly.
Review Environment
Category summary
A structured overview of a category generated from the classified properties of its items as a whole. Summaries provide a higher-level view of a category before individual items are examined. They are derived from the classified data and do not represent independent editorial judgement.
Content area
The part of the interface where the items of a selected category are displayed. The content area updates when the user selects a different category from the navigation layer.
Item view
The detailed display of a single item, showing all its classified fields and any cross-references. The item view is accessed by selecting an item from the category listing in the content area.
Review tools
The functions available within the review environment that support comparison and observation. Review tools operate on the classified data already present in the interface and do not retrieve additional information or modify existing content.
Session
A period of active use of the interface from access to conclusion. The interface retains navigation context during a session. Sessions do not store user notes or annotations; any records of observations must be maintained externally by the user.
Structured observations
Observations made by a user based on their review of classified items. The term refers to user-generated conclusions drawn from the platform's content, as distinct from the system-generated category summaries. Structured observations are not stored by the platform.
Access Framework
Access confirmation
The communication from Kelvetorpe that confirms an access request has been approved and provides the information needed to reach the interface. Access confirmation is sent by email to the address provided in the original request.
Access request
A formal submission from an individual or organisation seeking permission to use the Kelvetorpe platform. Requests are submitted via the enquiries page and are reviewed by the support team. Submission of a request does not guarantee approval.
Access review
The process by which the support team evaluates an access request. The review considers whether the platform is suited to the stated purpose and whether the request meets the criteria applied at the time. The review may involve a request for further information.
Support team
The Kelvetorpe team responsible for handling access requests, enquiries, and user questions. The support team can be contacted at [email protected] or via the contact form on the enquiries page.
