Kelvetorpe's Functional Capabilities: Classification and Structured Review
A detailed account of the functions available within the Kelvetorpe service, covering how information is classified, how it can be reviewed, and how the interface guides users through organised content.
Four Stages of Working with the Interface
Using Kelvetorpe follows a consistent sequence regardless of the specific category being reviewed. Understanding these stages helps users make effective use of what the service provides.
-
Request and Confirm Access
Submit an access request through the enquiries page. Once reviewed and approved, you receive confirmation along with the information needed to reach the interface. Access is specific to the individual user and the agreed scope of use.
-
Orient Within the Category Structure
On first access, take time to review the full category listing. This gives a clear picture of what the platform contains and how the classification scheme divides information. The category names and their ordering are fixed for your access tier.
-
Select a Category and Examine Items
Navigate to a category and review the items presented there. Each item displays the information assigned to it through the classification process. Items can be examined individually, and related items in the same or adjacent categories can be followed through cross-reference links where available.
-
Use the Review Tools to Draw Observations
The review environment provides tools for comparing items, noting relationships, and building an understanding of the classified content as a whole. These tools support inspection and observation. Any records you need to retain from a session should be made separately, as the interface does not store user notes.
What Each Capability Provides
The following explains the four principal capabilities of the Kelvetorpe system in more detail. Each capability operates independently but contributes to a consistent overall experience of working with organised information.
Information Classification
Classification is the process by which items are assigned to categories within the system. This takes place before user access and follows a defined scheme that determines which properties of an item are used to assign its category. The classification is visible to users through the category label attached to each item. Users do not alter the classification of items, but they can filter their view to focus on specific categories or subcategories within their access tier. The classification scheme is designed to be stable, though it may be updated during scheduled reviews.
Structured Data Review
The review capability allows users to examine the full content of individual items within a category. When an item is selected, the interface presents all classified fields in a consistent layout. Related items, where links have been established, are presented alongside. The structured layout means that the same type of information appears in the same position for every item within a category, making it easier to compare items without having to search for the relevant field each time. Review does not produce output automatically; any observations are for the user to record externally.
Guided Navigation
Navigation within the platform is guided by the category structure and by in-interface signposting. Categories that contain items relevant to the one currently being reviewed are indicated, and users can move between related categories without returning to the top-level navigation. This guided approach is intended to help users build a comprehensive view of a topic across multiple categories rather than reviewing categories in isolation. The guidance reflects the classification relationships established when the scheme was designed and does not adapt dynamically to individual user behaviour.
Categorised Observation Support
The observation support function provides users with a framework for drawing structured observations from the information they have reviewed. This takes the form of summary fields that reflect the key classified properties of a category as a whole, rather than individual items. Users can view these summaries alongside the detailed item listings to gain a higher-level perspective on a category before or after examining individual items. Summaries are generated from the classified data and do not reflect editorial judgement or external analysis. They should be treated as a structural aid rather than as independently verified conclusions.
The classification process moves information from an unstructured state to an organised, reviewable form.
Requesting Access to the Functions
All functional capabilities described on this page are available to users who have been granted access to the Kelvetorpe platform. Access is not self-service; it is reviewed and confirmed by the support team in response to a submitted request.
The scope of access available to a particular user may not include all categories in the system. The enquiries page contains a contact form and a description of what to include in an access request to help the team understand your intended use of the service.
If you have questions about whether a specific functional capability is available at your access tier, the support team can provide clarification before you submit a formal request. Contact details are available on the enquiries page.
